Building a retaining wall isn’t like moving scrap or sorting debris. Every stone has to land in the right spot, at the right angle, tight against the one next to it. The Hydra Grapple gives operators the clamping force and rotational control to pick, rotate, and seat boulders and block without fighting the machine for every inch.
Getting a 2,000+ lb boulder into a wall line happens in two moves. First you pick it and rotate it to the right face before it’s anywhere near the wall. The Hydra Grapple’s 360° continuous rotation lets you do that in the air, so you’re not repositioning the excavator every time a stone lands wrong.
Second, you seat it. This is where most grapples fall apart on wall work. You need to nudge a stone tight against its neighbor, hold the batter angle, and keep clamp pressure steady the whole time. CMP’s cylinder lock valves (on models HG102–HG402) hold full clamping force without you holding the control button. That means both hands free for fine positioning instead of fighting the stick.
Boulders and quarried block aren’t uniform. A standard grapple clamps inconsistently on odd shapes, and stones slip mid-swing right when you don’t want them to. The Hydra Grapple’s high-force hydraulic clamp holds securely across irregular surfaces, so you’re not babysitting a stone over a finished course.
Rotational torque matters more on wall jobs than almost anywhere else. Yards are tight, slopes limit how far you can swing the machine, and you often can’t reposition tracks without disturbing what you’ve already built. Oversized slewing bearings give the Hydra Grapple up to twice the rotational torque of competing grapples, so the stone turns instead of the excavator.
Wall building is also slow, deliberate work compared to a grab-and-drop job. Competing grapples force you to hold clamp pressure for the entire placement. Ours doesn’t. Add in cross relief valves that cushion sudden stops, and AR steel wear edges on a high-tensile body, and you’ve got an attachment built for hours of repeated heavy contact, not just one big lift.
Can the Hydra Grapple handle stone heavier than a standard grapple? Yes. Its clamping force and slewing bearing design are built to hold irregular, oversized stone that standard grapples struggle to grip securely.
